Just do it slow and make sure that the puppy is very well supervised when he’s with your boys. They do have really sharp teeth and nails. One bad nip from the puppy and the boys might be terrified of the dog for a long time. Lots and lots of supervision until the puppy can get a little older and be trusted. Don’t rush the process, you don’t want either one to be terrified of the other. Good luck to you!

Thanks Joe! The best thing I can recommend is to start getting her used to small stretches of time home alone now. Start with maybe a half hour away, then an hour, and so on. Slowly working your way up from short trips away to longer ones. Slowly acclimating her as you go. When you’re home all the time like you are now it’s the best time to do this.

Love your videos and articles!

My family recently got a beautiful doberman puppy named Cleo and she is 4 months old.

At the moment I am lucky enough to be home with her during the days but I would like to start preparing for when no one is home all the time. How could/should I start preparing her for this?

I have watched and liked every video you have uploaded and I really love it. This was one of the best articles I read about this topic. I have a 6-month-old female fawn Doberman. She is very energetic and smart, she knows how to find a solution to everything. The issue is me and my wife have recently joined a full-time job and we have two options either to leave her alone for 10-11 hours or either to give her away. She howls and barks ( Crying) when she is left alone, even for a short period of time. She just keeps howling but never destroys anything. I am her trainer and I very well know what bond we share and she is very cunning so I doubt that she will settle down with another person or not. I want your valuable advice on this please do help me with this John.
I really love her and I don’t want to give her away.

Awaiting for your response.

I am planning on taking a little vacation when I get the pup, I hope the boys dont get upset with new dog in house. They are used to other animals on the property any advise on entering a new pup into the family

She is very smart and learns tricks quickly. I keep a log of times and what she does , peddle or poop throughout the day and evening. She had issues with diarrhea for quite a while after we got her and now seem to have that under control but every time I think we’re on our way to being house broke she messes in the house again. I take her out every 1 to 2 hours and always take her out after eating. We live in Oregon so between not liking rain and wind and diarrhea issues it’s made it difficult but…? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

The first few weeks are pretty important for bonding reasons. I would certainly try my best to find a way where I could be with him if at all possible.

Im thinking of leaving him with my mom and her miniature schnauzer for the first few weeks. Is this a good idea or not?

I’m so glad to hear Janette! I wonder how it’s going now that you’ve started your new job! I hope it’s going smoothly and your dog is adjusting well. Sounds like your dog has a very caring owner so even if there are issues, I’m sure you will work through it together!

You can try to bump up the exercise a bit, leave a TV on, leave more interesting toys for her (that she only gets when you leave, not the rest of the time – so it’s something special for her), and using some puzzle toys that involve her working for a treat. Those are some of the areas where I would start…
