Congrats on the new pup that’s coming! Your Dobie might pick up on some small behaviors from the other dogs, but lucky for you the Doberman is going to be very human-focused so it’ll matter a lot more what you teach him. Setting boundaries could be tough and might involve some separation from the other dogs while training though. Don’t rush mixing the dogs before everyone is ready.

I’m mentally prepping to get a Doberman pup at the end of next month and I am BEYOND excited. I have two dogs, a GSP and a chihuahua, at home that are my parents and are not under my care who are untrained. What are some tips you have for training the Doberman under the same roof as the other two and setting boundaries when the other dogs have not learned that? Will the Doberman possibly pick up on their behaviors?
Thank you!

You’re very welcome! I’m so glad you are getting some useful information from what I’ve been putting out. You definitely have a little extra challenge being in a second-floor apartment for sure! Hang in there!

Thank you!

My Dobie Cosmos is 3 months old, he is my first puppy and first dog ever.
Going through your videos on youtube then reading your training guide on the website has helped me tremendously. I am investing time and energy is his training cause the younger the better.
I am able to work through almost everything with him except the potty training. I am finding it challenging specially living in an apartment on the second floor.

Hi Ann, if it were me I would probably start by focusing on socializing your dog with other dogs. Bring her to dog parks, play dates with friend’s dogs or family dogs, etc. Just start on square one with socialization. It seems like other dogs are still exciting and potentially scary to your dog and I would start with simply socialization and desensitization… slowly and carefully of course.

Thanks so much Dean! It just makes me really happy to hear that there are people out there getting some use out of the information I work so hard to put out there!

Very interesting and informative read . I have had the honor of owning a beautiful Doberman named Saleen . She came to me at 8mths. She was the dog from hell ! What she did for the first 8 months I have no idea but it certainly created a huge challenge in my life . My training Saleen was exciting challenging , fun and frustrating at times .
We would spend at least 4 hrs a day outside both training and play period everyday. I had to make sure she spilt all her energy everyday ….. the best route to a well behaved friend. My training style is very similar to yours ….. all about positive love and direction….. coaching and guiding , being firm and staying alpha will reward you with best friend you will ever have . Every single day for 10 yrs I would challenge Saleen to do something different and excite her mentally …..,so cool to watch a Doberman think . I could go on forever…..
love you site John
I support you , you are informative and a true Doberman lover !
Cheers
Mike

We made a lot of mistakes with the other ones and both the dog and ourselves were worse off for it.
I am now referring to your site almost daily to get both of us better trained.
I wanted to say that I know your site is a lot of work, however it is really appreciated.

My husband and I have retired, so we really do not have to worry about leaving the Dobies alone. But they do fine when we do. I have 2 Doberman’s now. A black male that is very large (120 lbs) and no fat. Big European Dobie. After we lost our last female to cardiomyopathy we adopted a 86lb red female that was in a car wreck with her male owner. He died, she just has a small scar on her head. She is doing great and can really stand up to and play with our big Dobie. I have had 13 Dobermans since about 1982 or so. Normally 2 at a time but for years we had 3. Most of our Dobies that have died early was from cardiomyopathy.
Thanks for your article
